The SASAT-1 Space Services Mission.

All South Australian schools and students were invited to participate in a competition to name the satellite. Premier, The Hon Steven Marshall MP announced Kanyini, entered by Findon High School as the winning entry at the Australian Space Forum on 15 September 2021.

Toolbox were engaged to develop a brand identity for Kanyini. The identity reflects, not only the technology connected to South Australia’s first satellite, but also the strong connection to our land and the First Nation culture of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara people of North-Western South Australia. The elements of the identity are simple, a set of orbiting ellipses which offset to form the letter ‘K’, in three colours which symbolise blue of the sky, green of foliage and ochre of our lands.

The simple typography supports the delicate nature of the symbol and allows it to float above the name as a base. The meaning of the word APY Lands word ‘Kanyini’ is responsibility and unconditional love for all of creation and encompasses the key principles of Aboriginal life including creation (tjukurrpa), soul (kurunpa), family (walytja), and land (ngura) – it is an enormous caring with no limit; it has no timeframe and is eternal.
