PROHIBITION LIQUOR CO.

BRANDING AND LABEL DESIGN

IN 2015 Toolbox set about creating a new brand for the emerging Australian craft gin market, with the goal of differentiating from anything else on the shelves. The goal was to create an Australian ultra-premium gin, which had never existed - reinforcing premium price tier, exceptional quality product, with iconic shelf appeal. Naming and identity were crucial, along with bottle selection and label design which would offer cut-through on busy bar shelves, whilst being memorable and creating a unique brand story.

DISTILLERY AND TASTING ROOM

The Prohibition Liquor Co Distillery Tasting Room, opened in December 2017, embodies a unique brand experience for casual guests and Prohibition fans to enjoy alike. Every detail reinforces the quality of the product, from signage, menus and postcards to custom decor and sculptural copper “bathtub” artwork. With educational masterclasses and Adelaide CBD’s only operational still, the Tasting Room encourages a new level of brand engagement whilst reinforcing the product’s position as a distinctive, high-quality spirit brand.

NEW PACKAGING DESIGN

After more than 5 years using an off-the-shelf bottle design, and with the growing need for more sustainable glass packaging, Toolbox led a redesign of Prohibition Liquor Co’s new, custom bottle.

Working with French glass specialists Saverglass, Toolbox created a distinctive, bespoke silhouette inspired by Art Deco elegance, improving shelf presence, usability, and brand ownership through a proprietry design. The new design is also 24% lighter, reducing material use, production energy, and transport emissions, delivering a more sustainable solution. Toolbox also helped secure carbon offsets, with environmental projects to achieve 100% carbon neutral.

The slimmer form introduced a smaller label face, requiring us to carefully evolve the much-loved label design, refining hierarchy, typography, and graphic elements to maintain clarity and impact within tighter constraints across the range.

This redesign was recently recognised as among the best in the world with a Gold Medal at the 2026 London World Gin Awards.

COLLABORATIONS AND LIMITED RELEASES

We enjoyed the challenge of consistently designing bottles for collaborations between PLC and companies and events such as the Adelaide Crows and Adelaide Festival, as well as limited release bottles including their Christmas release and small batch Whisky.
